Find Your Balance Again with Vestibular Physical Therapy

Do you ever feel dizzy, unsteady, or like the room is spinning? If this is familiar, you’re not alone, and help is available.

Here at Refuge Physiotherapy, we offer vestibular physical therapy for the treatment of dizziness and imbalance. Vestibular physical therapy is a highly effective treatment designed to reduce dizziness, improve balance, and help you regain confidence in your movements.

Your vestibular system is located in your inner ear, behind your eardrum, and works closely with your eyes and spinal muscles to help you stay upright and balanced. When this system isn’t working properly, it can cause: dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, unsteadiness with walking, blurred vision, and/or nausea.

These symptoms can result from various causes: dehydration, inner ear infections, anxiety, head injuries, certain medications, atmospheric or altitude pressure changes, aging, or conditions like Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

A vestibular physical therapist uses specialized exercises to retrain your brain and body to deal with inner ear dysfunction. Prolonged dizziness and vertigo can often lead to neck stiffness and difficulty with balance and gait.

Depending on your symptoms and diagnosis, your treatment plan may include: manual therapy and manipulation to restore cervical range of motion, eye and head turn coordination exercises to improve stability and focus, canalith repositioning maneuvers to treat BPPV, habituation exercises to decrease dizziness with certain movements, and balance training to reduce fall risk.

These targeted exercises can significantly improve your balance, reduce dizziness, and restore your mobility and confidence in daily activities.

Vestibular therapy is often life-changing for those struggling with chronic dizziness or imbalance. Many patients see improvement within a few sessions and your physical therapist will guide you every step of the way.

If you’ve been living with dizziness or balance problems, relief is possible. Contact Refuge Physiotherapy to schedule an evaluation and learn how vestibular physical therapy can help you overcome dizziness.
